The Three Types of Plantation Shutters to Consider

Plantation shutters add real value to your home because they have a longevity unlike any other window treatments, such as blinds and shades. They are definitely a more expensive option of window treatment for your home, but one must consider the many benefits that they have and that there are several options you may choose from if you installing them in your home. They come in real hardwood, faux wood (composite), and vinyl (PVC). Although all three options offer the same functionality, it is a matter of personal preference and budget as to which option you prefer.

Real wood plantation shutters are luxurious and provide that classic appeal that cannot be duplicated by man-made materials. They are the most expensive of the three options, but do offer a rich look that is unlike the others. This type of is typically offered in a variety of stains and paints to complement any décor in the home. If you do consider this type of plantation shutter, be aware that they do require a significant amount of care as compared to the other two types, because they are real wood. Just as the real wood furniture in your house is susceptible to scratches and warping, so is this real wood option. Care must be taken to ensure their beauty.

The next type of plantation shutter is the faux wood, also known as the composite wood shutter. This type of shutter is composed much the same way that composite wood furniture is made. The core is composed of man-made materials and recycled wood, which is surrounded by an outer covering of tough man-made material. Just like the real wood option, this type also comes in a variety of stain and paint options that can satisfy any home owner. This kind of composite wood option holds up very well in hot and humid environments and is an excellent choice for those living in temperate climates. The price of faux wood shutters is less than that of the luxurious real wood, but still more than our last option, vinyl.

The last option for plantation shutters to consider here is vinyl, or better known as PVC. They are the least costly of the three options and may be the most economical option to consider for high traffic areas such as childrens' rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Vinyl plantation shutters offer the best durability and are the cheapest choice. However, they are not available in a huge variety of stains or paints. Most often, this type is only available in common shades of white, cream, beige, and other similar colors.

Many people find that a smart approach is to purchase multiple kinds of plantation shutters for each room of choice. For instance, in the more prominent areas of your house, you may want to purchase the real-wood or faux wood to provide a rich look. In areas of your house that need a durable option, you may consider vinyl plantation shutters. With all types of these shutters, there is one thing that holds true for all of them, they are a window treatment option that lasts and is passed along with your home.

Exterior Shutters - Wood, Vinyl, Fiberglass, PVC, and Composite

Many people ask me all the time: "What kind of material should my exterior shutters be made from?" And I always like to discuss the pros and cons of different materials that they have to offer. these can involve cost, functionality, longevity, and more. Exterior shutters have evolved over time from wood to vinyl, as well as to other alternatives such as fiberglass, PVC, and composites so there are a variety of choices to sort through. This article will discuss the pros and cons of many exterior shutter styles to help you pick out the exterior shutter material that will best meet your needs.

Wood Exterior Shutters: Wood exterior shutters offer many advantages such as the look of wood, functionality, and paintability to match your home. They are medium in the price range compared to some of the alternatives. One of the main advantages to wooden exterior shutters is that they are extremely popular and easy to come by. They can be hinged to the home to give it a more decorative look as well as to provide function. The disadvantage is that they will eventually rot even if maintained. Expansion, sun, and water will eventually cause most wood shutters to begin rotting within about a five year period. To prolong the life of a wooden exterior shutter, try to place in the shade and avoid darker colors which will fuel expansion and deterioration. You should also repaint your wooden exterior shutters every few years to counter cracking and splitting which exposes the shutters to the elements.

Vinyl Exterior Shutters: Vinyl is by far the most affordable choice in shutters. Many vinyl exterior shutters, however, are made from moulds which means they are often only available in set lengths. This can sometimes limit their use on a home with custom sized windows. They are also sometimes referred to as "hollow back shutters" due to their hollow nature. This prevents them from being installed on hinges and requires them to be pinned down in all corners to avoid warping. They are a cost-effective way to add color to a home, however, some home owners do not like the shiny plastic look that accompanies vinyl.

PVC Exterior Shutters: These are an expensive upgrade over vinyl. They are made from solid material, which offers functionality and hingeability. They can also be painted and most cellular PVC materials have a matted finish which gives them the look and feel of wood. They are usually custom built by hand much the same way as you would build a wooden exterior shutter, however, they can easily cost twice as much. They are, however, designed to last a lifetime which means they will not have to be replaced like a wooden shutter alternative. You will, however, have to avoid painting them dark colors, unless they are thermally stabilized with internal rods. Check to make sure that your PVC exterior shutters are thermally stabilized before purchasing them if you plan to paint them dark colors.

Fiberglass Exterior Shutters: Fiberglass is an excellent choice. Although very costly, they are light in weight, forever lasting, and not subject to the same thermal expansion of a PVC shutter. They can also be painted and provide function.

Composite Exterior Shutters: Composite wood shutters are made from recycled cedar wood dust and treated with zinc borate to resist rotting. The average lifespan of a composite wood exterior shutter is about twice that of a regular wooden exterior shutters. The cost, however, tends to be reasonably comparable in price to that of wood and usually much less than that of PVC or Fiberglass. Compared to vinyl, composite wood exterior shutters are more expensive, but offer the look of wood and more customization since they are generally built by hand.

Plantation Shutters - Window Coverings at Their Finest

Plantation shutters, otherwise known as window shutters, are firm and secure coverings normally made of vertical stiles of frame with horizontal bars on the top, center and at the bottom. The frame is usually appended with louvers, fabric, solid panels, glass or any other embellishments that can be built within the frame.

The types of window shutters that have maneuverable louvers have different terms that include California shutters, traditional shutters, or plantation shutters. These terms normally refer to the louver blades' size. Other types of interior shutters employ fixed louvers that do not swivel, with flat or recessed tinted glass or fabric inserts and solid panels that can be lifted.

The plantation shutters are installed by people on their windows to have privacy and solitude inside the home, manage the amount of sunlight that enters a room, protect the room from weather changes and improve the building's value.

The manner of mounting the plantation shutters ultimately depends on the construction and application of the window frame, thus permitting the plantation shutters to overlap the opening or to fit inside the window opening. Interior shutters can be made from various wood types and an assortment of synthetic materials. They are stained and painted for decoration. Some buildings make use of shutters to appropriately cover the windows and even the doors.

Full height plantation shutters are manufactured with parallel partition railings that divide the upper and lower parts of the shutter. A rod or a tilt bar is utilized to regulate the louver level and to maintain them in a regular position. When the louver or rod is dented, there are replacement kits available in the market that provides expediency in installing and replacing the damaged part.

The interior window coverings or plantation shutters normally hinge on either of the window's sides. They turn inwards to allow an appropriate amount of light to enter the room. Louvered window shutters contain slats or louvers, which open and close to control the amount of light, airflow and visibility. They can even act as blackout blinds cutting out all lighting to a room if installed with this purpose in mind.

The types of plantation shutters are configured based on the number of tier units. A single tier unit contains one shutter from the top to the bottom of the window opening. Multiple tier units display separate shutters on every tier, letting the shutters on top open widely while the shutters on the bottom region remain closed, and vice versa. Shutters that only provide covering to the lower part of the window are known as Cafe shutters.

I enjoy writing about any type of house improvement, whether it's a renovation or simply adding window treatments like i.e. blackout blinds and installing interior plantation shutters. I find it all interesting and hope it helps the reader.

Affordable Indoor Window Shutters

Wooden indoor window shutters are not necessarily expensive to purchase especially when you take into account that once installed you will permanent window treatments that will never have to be taken down to wash or replace. Periodic dusting is all the cleaning a shutter needs. When choosing which type, style, or finish of shutter to purchase, take into account that you want a look that will work with your home décor for many years to come so durability and beauty should be at the top of your priority list. Many shutter manufacturers allow you to customize the type, style, size, and finish of your shutter order. Custom orders cost more but if you are investing in a long term window treatment option, the savings over the many years you plan to be in your home are well worth getting the exact shutter you want and need.

Some homeowners choose to cover their shutters with additional window coverings like curtains or valances. When considering which type of window cover will best work with your shutters, keep in mind that additional cover is mostly for décor purposes because the shutters will take care of your privacy needs. Installing a window valance over shutters may be tricky depending on the type of shutters you purchase. Depending on the style, some shutters cannot be opened properly if there is a curtain or valance in the way. Most shutters are made so beautifully with intricate craftsmanship and finishing that you may wish to leave exposed so everyone can see. Why cover up a piece of art? Leave the wood exposed and let your shutter be a focal point within your home décor.

Online shutter distributors offer great deals especially if you plan on order a large amount of shutters for your home. Some companies even offer free shipping so it is definitely worth looking into. Compare pricing, styles, and finishes online before you make any purchases. Local companies may even offer to install the shutters for an additional fee which is even more helpful and ideal for homeowners who lack the tools, experience, or time it takes to properly install the interior window shutters. To some, the extra expense is well worth getting the installation done properly and quickly.

Plantation Shutters - Reasons to Install These in Your Home

Why install Plantation Shutters?

Plantation Shutters are widely used today as a pleasing aesthetic, enhancing the appearance of windows with style and elegant chic. They are designed to allow light in to a room whilst keeping the heat or cold out. This is achieved by means of louvered slats that can be opened or closed at will.

It is generally accepted that natural light is far better for the eyes than artificial or electric lighting. Plantation shutters allow natural light to enter your home, whilst still maintaining privacy, and are often used as a modern alternative to window nets or blinds.

In the Kitchen

Often termed the heart of the home, people value privacy in their kitchens very highly. Plantation shutters are an excellent solution to this need, as the slats can be angled in such a way to avoid being overlooked, without darkening the room. They will also provide excellent ventilation, which is particularly useful in a kitchen environment, allowing steam and smoke from cooking to disperse.

In the Living Room

The adjustable natural lighting provided by plantation shutters makes for a wonderful feature in any living space. They allow the requisite amount of light to read or watch television by, whilst still providing privacy from the outside world. Plantation shutters will also help to moderate temperatures, allowing a cool breeze in or keeping the scorching sun out.

Café style shutters are ideal for a ground floor living space. Covering just the lower section of the window, they allow maximum light into the room and are a wonderful stylish addition to your home.

In the Bedroom

Shutters are a great choice of window dressing in the bedroom; as they provide privacy, light control and sound reduction. The louvered panels can be opened or shut depending on the time of day and your requirements. For sleeping, the panels can be closed completely to provide near black out conditions. Whilst dressing and applying makeup, the louvers can be opened for excellent natural light.

Plantation shutters create a stylish, contemporary look in the bedroom, and work with a wide range of colour schemes and furniture styles.

In the Home Office or Study

Plantation shutters are a popular choice for home office environments, due to the versatility they bring to the room. They offer excellent control of light as the sun moves during the day and allow you to benefit from as much daylight as possible. Some form of window covering is usually important in this room to assist with home security. Shutters are a more modern alternative to net curtains, and provide a clean contemporary look.

The positioning of your home office or study will most likely dictate which style of shutter you opt for. A ground floor space will call for either a full-length plantation shutter or cafe style shutter whereas an upper floor space may only require the Cafe style. Keep an eye to the look of the house from the outside, as it is here where the effect can be fully appreciated.

When potential buyers are looking at a home, many upgrades get their attention. Floor tile, fireplace, and tile backsplash are some popular additions to a home. One upgrade, however, really makes homebuyers take notice. That upgrade is plantation shutters.

Plantation shutters are interior shutters installed inside a window. Though the name is often used to describe any interior window shutters, true plantation shutters feature that are 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide, set into panels that are 12 to 19 ½ inches. The panels can be adjusted as needed to let in light or to keep it out. This adds shade to a home and can even help reduce the energy bills. Shutters also add privacy in areas that require it. For this reason, many people install plantation shutters in large windows over the bathtub or in the bedroom. Many people also use plantation shutters in windows facing the street. Plantation shutters can be used in every window in the home, but the cost for this would be great.

Plantation shutters are available in most every type of wood or in vinyl. Customers looking for a stained look should buy wooden shutters as vinyl offers a painted look. Some new vinyl shutters are made to replicate the look of wood. These are a cheaper alternative for those desiring wood.

Plantation shutter installation is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project. Installation is quick and requires few tools. If you prefer, some companies do offer installation at an additional price. Contractors or “handymen for hire” can also be hired to install the shutters.

If you do opt to do the installation yourself, the most important thing is to accurately measure. You will want to make sure that your shutters are a precise fit for your window. An inaccurate fit will greatly detract from the shutters’ look and value. Manufacturers will offer detailed installation instructions. Home improvement stores also offer tips and suggestions for installation. In addition, instructions are available on the Internet.

Dress Up Windows With Plantation Shutters

To give windows a more finished and polished appearance in the home, it's a good idea to install coverings such as Plantation Shutters, Venetian Blinds or Roman Shades. All of them add to the room's decor and provide a level of privacy as well as protection from sunlight. But each has distinct advantages that may prove more beneficial for some window openings and environments than others.

Many people like the elegance and classic simplicity of Plantation Shutters, which are interior window coverings made from broad slats of wood mounted in a solid frame. These shutters gained wide usage throughout the southeastern United States because they are perfect for using in warm, humid climates since they allow for the free-flow of air and ventilation through the slates at the same time providing shade from the sun to keep the inside of the house cool.

Traditionally, Plantation Shutters fill the entire window space, with a control rod in the center to open or close the shutters. They can also be designed as hinged panels which can be pulled completely open for the maximum in ventilation or folded partway open. Plantation Shutters can also be designed to fill only the bottom half of a window, allowing the Cafe-style Plantation Shutters to provide some level of privacy without covering the entire window. Plantation Shutters are usually installed in windows that have glass or removable glass panes so that in hot weather, the glass can be stored and the shutters opened enough for air without eliminating privacy or shade.

Venetian Blinds, first created in New Orleans in the mid 19th century, are another popular style of interior window covering that can be shut to completely exclude outside light and any outside prying eyes. Constructed of slatted blinds of metal or vinyl arranged in numerous rows and connected with a string that allows the slats to be turned at an angle or parallel to the window sill to let some sunlight enter, or to lie completely flat against the window to exclude all light. This string system also allows the blinds to be pulled up or down if the user wishes to have access to the window.

Roman Blinds, also called Roman Shades, are a third option to dressing up a window opening, but uses fabric rather than slats. The shade fabric can be lined or unlined depending whether light control is needed. The fabric lies flat against the window when in the lowest position for complete coverage, yet can be raised upward toward the top of the window jam, folding neatly accordion-style to allow an unobstructed view from the window. Roman Blinds can also be partially raised, accented by neat horizontal folds of material. This style works best when clean horizontal lines are desired in a window covering as well as the option of using fabric that matches the rest of the room's decor.

Where Did Plantation Shutters Originate?

They first appeared in windows of homes in ancient Greece. Greece is a dusty, hot country for most of the year and people were always looking for ways to control ventilation and protect their homes from the direct heat of the sun. The first shutters were apparently made with fixed marble louvers and attached to the outside of the house. Naturally, making them out of marble made them very heavy and unwieldy, so before too long the idea came up to switch marble for wood. Wood was easier to work with, less heavy and easier to manipulate.

Before long, fixed wooden louvers were replaced with movable ones, which allowed greater control over how much light entered the room, and allowed for better control of air flow. Another plus with having them movable was that they could also be closed tightly shut when rains or winds were strong, protecting the homes during storms, and opened again afterwards to allow fresh air and light into the room.

Shutters were in common use during medieval times all over Europe. At that time they were built solid, however, and were not louvered. Their prime use was to protect house owners from thieves and robbers as covered windows made it difficult for thieves or the poor to gain entrance into the house. Glass wasn't commonly used in windows till Tudor or Elizabethan times, and even then it was very expensive and used only by the rich. The rest of the population were content with wooden shutters, and as time went by gradually these went from being practical only, to becoming decorative as well. Wooden slats improved air circulation inside homes, and brightened the appearance as well.

With the colonization of America by the Spanish it became common to see Spanish or European styled housing being built. Rich landowners, such as plantation owners, in the South especially, seemed to favour the Spanish style architecture which included putting wood shutters on windows, thus giving rise to the popular name for this type of window covering.

Today shutters are made from a variety of material. Wooden plantation shutters are still some of the more popular ones on the market, often made from either hard wood or basswood. They are also available in vinyl, plastic or faux-wood. Prices vary a lot, depending on the material they are made from with the hard-wood ones being the most expensive of all. Basswood is also a very popular choice especially as the stained wood is very pretty. They are now found in windows all around the world and are no longer restricted to Europe or plantation owners in the South.

Why Choose Plantation Shutters For Your Home Windows?

Plantation shutters are only one style of shutters that people buy, but when people think of shutters, the name "Plantation" often comes to mind. Why? Because they are a classic. So what are they?

Plantation shutters have a movable louver that allows the shutters to open and close. They are often much wider than traditional shutters which are usually 1 to 1 1/4 inches These shutter louvers can be up to 5 1/2 inches in width. That makes it easier to regulate the view and the light coming in the window.

The louvers on Plantation shutters come in two designs, flat and elliptical. The elliptical louver is rounded and tapers towards the ends. That gives it more strength in handling than the flat louver. So if you are going to be opening and closing your shutters often, go with the elliptical. Most manufacturers are making the elliptical styles. They catch less dust and are more pleasing to the eye.

Many designers contend that this style of shutter lend a more contemporary feel to a room. Modern homes tend to have larger rooms with large, open windows. These can be hard to drape. In fact, many will require customized draperies and that can get pricey. Besides, drapes hide the architecture of the windows. Shutters do not.

Plantation shutters can add value to your home. Not everyone is going to like the pattern or style of your draperies. Styles and patterns change. Like clothes, when it comes to drapes, what is "in" today may be very "out" in a few years. Besides, draperies fade. This style is a classic. They last and last. Everyone's décor can fit into a room with shutters, whether the room is formal parlor or a comfy den, a home theatre or a home office, a bedroom or a study.

A good tip when looking at Plantation shutters is to buy the largest louver possible. The reason is that the larger the louver, the fewer panels are needed. That means the more visibility and light is available. Very large windows can take very large louvers up to 5 1/2 inches without looking out of proportion to the room.

All shutters are what is known as semi-opaque. That means that when closed, they block out most to the light- enough to darken a room. The great thing about shutters is, that like blinds, you can adjust the amount of light that enters the room. That protects your furniture and carpets from fading so quickly. It also can cut down on the energy bills. Unlike blinds, they are more durable. If you have pets or small children, you do not have to worry about the potential hazards of cords. That is a big plus.

One thing to remember when measuring for Plantation shutters is that the louvers are spaced on a half inch narrower than the louver. For example, a 2 1/2 inch louver has a 2 inch spaced center; a 3 1/2 has a 3 inch spaced center, etc.

Plantation shutters offer privacy as well as ambience. When thinking about how to dress your windows, go with the classic, easy to maintain Plantation shutters. You won't regret it.

It would be a disaster to your home's aesthetic value if you use shutters that are ill-fitted or do not match the look of your house.

There are two options available to homeowners when shopping for custom exterior shutters and they are wooden shutters and synthetic shutters. A common material used in synthetic window shutters is Thermalite. This type of material replicates the appearance and texture of wood. Unlike wood though, this material is said to be able to resist fire and moisture and provides better insulation. Wood shutters, on the other hand, come in different types of wood. The most common type of wood that is used in shutters is cedar because of its durability and flexibility. Many manufacturers assemble ready to install shutters.

The choice between wooden and synthetic shutters is largely a matter of personal choice. If you want to stick to old-school home renovating techniques and appreciate the detail that only wood can produce, then you should go for wooden shutters. If you want the advantages of synthetic materials then go with synthetic shutters. Either way, you should perform a thorough research so you will find a trusted company that provides shutters that will last a long time.

Adding custom exterior shutters will definitely do wonders to your home's aesthetic value. In fact, if you are looking to provide an instant upgrade to your home, then getting custom shutters is the simplest and most affordable thing that you can do.

Wood Plantation Shutters - Get the Benefits

Wood Plantation Shutters are constructed with thick horizontal wooden slats and a vertical wooden handle, which allows the shutters to be easily opened and closed. There are many benefits to wood plantation shutters for homeowners.

Benefits:

Security

Wood plantation shutters or shutters of any type for that matter, allow increased security for your home. Most shutters allow homeowners to lock them from the inside, which increases security. You'll experience a nice cozy feeling knowing there is more than a thin single sheet of glass separating you from the bad guys.

Energy Costs

Rising energy costs have been a nightmare over the last decade and there is no clear indicator they will drop any time soon. Our fading economy is causing a double whammy on the issue of energy savings... less money in our pockets and more money going out. You can reduce your spending on heating and cooling costs simply by having wood plantation shutters installed on the outside of your home.

Heat transfers through glass rather well, especially because it's so thin. Having external shutters on your home creates a thick barrier of non-heat-conducting material between the scorching heat outside and the nice expensive cool air inside your home. You can reap similar benefits in the winter, as the exact opposite is true. Shutters will keep the heat in your home and the cold air out.

Appearance

Wood plantation shutters are aesthetically appealing and will beautify the exterior of your home. By adding curb appeal to your home, you're increasing its value. Wood Plantation shutters are a wise investment for more than just security and energy savings.

Information on Buying Wood Plantation Shutters

There is certainly no shortage of companies selling shutters to the general public. A simple web search will reveal tons of ads and pages. It's unlikely any actual research on shutters can be accomplished online because of the vast numbers of retailers. However, research is a critical component before buying shutters. Not all shutters will provide the same benefits.

Many shutters are manufactured in one off, cookie cutter factories and are not guaranteed to fit your exact window tightly and securely. To gain the maximum benefit from shutters, you will want to ensure they are custom built to your actual windows and installed by knowledgeable pros.

Installing Shutters

Installation of shutters is no different than most other home improvement jobs. Unless you're already a carpenter or general contractor, you're best off leaving the installation to experienced knowledgeable professionals. Sure, you can probably install them yourself without drilling a hole straight through your wall, but then again, you might not be able to. Stick to what you know best which is, well, whatever it is you do for a living.

Summary

There are many benefits to having wood plantation shutters installed on your home. Take precautions to ensure you get the right style, size, and construction of the shutters you purchase. Leave installation to the pros if you're not a bona fide handyman. Follow this humble advice and you'll be able to sit back in your cool, comfy house, feeling safe and secure, while sipping iced tea and saving money. All thanks to your new wood plantation shutters.

Patio Doors Will Not Shut

Have you ever had a tilt and slide patio door? I have, and they have always caused me hours of pain and misery! I am not kidding! I remember one time I was trying to shut the tilt and slide door after a party. Its so nice to have the patio door open and the breeze flowing into the house on a hot summers afternoon, and its even nicer when you have a lot of people over for a party as well. It makes it easier for people to get in and out of the house for food and drinks if there are 2 entrances back into the house. Well the party went great, good food and wine, and everybody was happy. I was really happy because the next day I was going on holiday and all that was left to do was the cleaning up. Not so bad as usual, the cleaning up, and it was getting dark outside, so i decided to close the patio door as well. Here came the problem - the door had come off its rail and would not budge. It was like it was jammed stuck and I could not close it.

I had 3 choices to try and solve the situation

1) Call somebody out to fix it at very short notice which is very expensive.
2) Try and wedge the door shut and go on holiday with the knowledge in my mind that the house could easily be broken into
3) Call my dad who lies 20 miles away and try and get him to come over.

In the end, I decide that calling the professional over was the thing to do, so I call my dad. The way to fix a problem with a tilt and slide door is this. It has a locating pin that will collapse on the hinges and the bottom of the door closest to the frame, then you have to push the top of the frame then push the handle down to close it. The locating pin was hitting the top of the stopper and not managing to get it back in. Still with me on this? I found a very small broken collar that sits around the pivot pushing the pin a little closer to the locator. It had broken and fallen out the locator pin was not lining up. The only way i can see of fixing this is a whole new locator hardware on the bottom of the door. So this is what you need to do. Go to a big DIY store and find a new locator for the bottom of the door, once that has been fitted, your worries should be over - thanks Dad!

Tips For Buying Truly Green House Plans

If you're in the market for a new house plan, you've may have already become overwhelmed at the sheer volume of plans that are available today on both the internet and in house plan-related magazines and books.

Finding that perfect floor plan, in the perfect square footage range, matched with the perfect exterior Architectural style, can be very difficult. Added to that may be the confusion over which type of house plan package do you actually need?

Don't let the process overwhelm you. Here are some tips:

- Always make sure that you purchase your house plans from a Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD) who is a member of the American Institute of Building Design.

Designers who have met the strict educational requirements, have suitable work experience and training in the field, and have passed the CPBD examination are highly-skilled professionals that specialize in the design and development of residential home plans. Don't settle for less in choosing your plans.

- If you find a house plan that fits "most" of your needs but not all, its typically quicker, better, and cheaper to have the actual designer of the house plans make these modifications for you, where possible.

- If you live in an area with unique building code requirements (i.e. hurricane/earthquake prone areas of the US) or specific state-licensed Architect/Engineer stamping requirements, then you may need to have the modifications done by a local professional. In this case, you would need to purchase a stock house plan package that comes with a "modifiable" license. The packages that come with this type license include: CAD Files, Reproducible/Vellum, and where available, PDF Files.

In regard to the PDF File plan package, a small number of leading home designers are now offering this option to their customers as a standard option.

What is the PDF File plan package:

The "PDF File" plan package is your best value, and provides you with an electronic version of the plan's construction documents. This plan package provides many advantages over the Reproducible, 8 Set, 5 Set, 1 Set, and Review Set plan packages including:

- Need more copies of the plan? No problem. Simply take the file to any local print shop and have them print out your copies in your desired size. In addition, you will have the copies available for use....that same day, in most cases.

- Need different size copies for different people? Easy. You can print out an 8 1/2 x 11 set for your office, a 11 x 17 set for your local building officials, a 18 x 24 set for your builder, a 24 x 36 master set for yourself. Unlimited flexibility.

- Need to modify the plan locally? PDF Files have got you covered. Simply take the PDF to a local building design professional and they will be able to update your drawings in the same way as if you provided them with a printed "Reproducible" set.

- Need your plans immediately? No need to wait for your plans to ship. Most designers can email you the PDF file, usually the same day.

Keep in mind that many designers might only offer a sub-group of their plans in the electronic PDF File format, but the more innovative, Award-winning design firms like House Plan Gallery, offer every single house plan in their collection with the PDF File plan package.

The PDF File plan package is truly the "green" choice for buying house plans in this day and age. No paper is used in its creation, no waste by-products are generated, and its innate ability to be electronically and quickly "mailed" to you is a huge benefit that you can take advantage of today.

Plantation Shutters Provide Style and Elegance

Adding Style and Elegance Through Plantation Shutters

To add a touch of class and elegance, it is a good option to consider using plantation shutters. These are Greek Architecture inspired window hardware that transcends to today's time. It is both functional and aesthetic by nature. They work as interior shutters that fill up your entire window for an ample amount of covering. Most plantation shutters are wooden but among the popular choices are vinyl and PVC. Vinyl is a very good material because it is requires little amount of maintenance.

Since plantation shutters are louvered shutters, it is very convenient to open and close. It has latches and hinges that support the ease of moving and swinging it open or close. While some shutters are movable, some are also fixed and stationary. Whenever you want to control the amount of light coming in inside your home, you can easily manipulate this through the shutters. People are fond of using them as they can hang the shutters all together to let maximum light come in, have it partially opened if necessary, or close it entirely by choice. This way, both light and air can be thoroughly controlled with their pathway.

Casement windows that work by series or rows of consecutive windows are very fitting for the use of plantation shutters. When the shutters are installed in the interior of the windows, the arrangement becomes very appealing to the eyes of any onlooker. Large picture windows and spacious bay windows also work well with plantation shutters. Recall that these shutters, like hurricane shutters, do not only offer comfort of use and functionality but also style and modern elegance. It is only fitting to say that plantation shutters are very versatile window treatments being used nowadays.

Which Type of Shutter Should I Use?

The shutter panels of this window treatment are usually constructed with pine. The good thing about plantation shutters is that they are both available as either roughly finished or raw. This gives the homeowners or contractors the freedom to finish the pre-built ones on their own. This will give them an opportunity to add a personal touch on the panels by having them painted on their own using their color of choice or have them raw and unfinished for a change.

If you check out the hardware stores around, a wide array of color selection is readily available. The popular choices like vinyl and PVC come in variety of colors so that contractors or home owners working on a home repair does not have to worry about picking the odd color out of the choices.

Homeowners consider the color finish because they would not want to make a coloring book out of their homes. It has to match well the interior and exterior of their home so that it would give quite an impact to any visitors who might drop by. Home repairs, after all, are not only for the ones who might check out your homes but is also one way of giving yourself and your own home the pride and esteem of being shown off around.

When choosing the material of the plantation shutters, consider the humidity level of your home. Both PVC and vinyl also work out as the best picks for several rooms at home because it can prevent your homes from too much moisture and steam like the bathroom and the rooms by your poolside.

Plantation Shutters As Security Shutters

The secondary purpose of plantation shutter is for a good deal of privacy and security. These shutters can be put for use at almost any part of the house. It can limit the amount of view to be seen from the outside as well from the inside. Artificial lighting, ventilation and the sunshine brought inside the house are among the few factors that can be controlled very well by plantation shutters.

Steve Bukento continually writes news on areas dealing with exterior shutters and exterior house shutters. Which Way to Face Your House Plans?

There are a myriad of directions a house can face so for the sake of this discussion the only ones used will be north, south, east and west. No mention of north by northeast or any other more complicated directions will be used to keep this simple. There are many reasons to face the door or entry to the east. Most of them are due to spirituality and the fact that you can wake up to the morning sun streaming into your home. If your luxury mansion house plans don't allow for an east facing entry then others are equally as advantageous, especially if you are not Native American and believe the door should face the east.

Having the main living area with windows facing the south is a good idea due to the fact that the sun is low on the horizon in the winter and can heat your house through the windows. The north side is always in the shade and will even grow moss in the desert during the winter. Even if your plans are simple bungalow house plans the setting of the structure on the property is key to enjoying the house.

If you study or believe that Feng Shui has something to offer, hiring a practitioner may be a good idea. If in your luxury home plans you have included an art studio, the classic setting for that is facing north. That way you will never have direct sun coming in the window. It will always be diffused light bouncing into the room. That makes for wonderful Rembrandt lighting.

No matter what your hobbies or beliefs, getting the right plans for your dream house and deciding how to set the house on the property is imperative. At House Plans and More you will find luxury mansion house plans, bungalow house plans and your basic luxury house plans.

English Country House Plans Recall the Magic of Childhood

English country house plans evolved from the tenants' cottages on large manors in Western England during the Middle Ages. Originally these simple structures were fashioned of wattle and daub or stone, and topped with high thatched roofs to facilitate rain runoff. For many people, the archetypical English cottage home is the storybook image of a small dwelling nestled in trees at the end of a country road, with smoke curling up from the chimney, and rose bushes climbing up the walls onto the thatched roof; with little old men and ladies gazing out of small, leaded windows flanked by shutters and a flower box. There is something in this image which is undeniably appealing, and which makes cottage-style living the dream of many modern city-dwellers. On the other hand, this picture also implies cramped living quarters, dark interiors, and perhaps few modern amenities. In order to define the continuing appeal of cottage living, the words that spring to mind are "comfort", "simplicity", "charm", "intimacy" and "romance" rather than the overwrought, pretentious grandiosity of, say luxury estate house plans mansions. The point is that cottage-style living is a state of mind as much as it as a physical presence.

To understand the appeal of English cottage living, think back to the happiest scenes of your childhood: the snug burrow hidden beneath the thick lilac bush; the tree fort cradled high up in the maple limbs; the closet in the attic with its secret passage way beneath the stairs; the bunk-bed at the summer cabin piled high with thick blankets. What do these memories have in common? How did you feel when you were hiding and playing in them with your siblings and playmates? For most people, cottage-style living evokes these forts, closets, hollows - cozy, secret happy places of childhood. When we were children we created spaces which made us feel secure and safe. Although we are now adults, we still have the need for magical, mysterious places which hug us snugly within their boundaries and provide a soothing resting place - retreat from the hustle-bustle world outside.

English cottage homes capture a warm, cozy feeling. The fairytale style of authentic English country cottage house plans became very popular in the United States between the 1890's and 1940's. In the modern style these cottages often have hip roofs with steep gables; with stone, stucco, or shingle siding. The asymmetrical design often has floor plans of one-and-a-half stories, together with quaint interior design features such as artistic niches and nooks. Since they tend to be small in size, English cottage homes are usually favored by young or retired couples rather than couples with growing families. Besides their romantic appeal, cottages are easy to maintain and easy to live in. The house itself encourages an informal, relaxed style of living close to nature. The unpretentious cottage lifestyle means that more attention can be paid to fine details and craftsmanship than ostentatious luxuries. English cottage living expresses who you are and how you prefer to live life - close to nature and the earth - with little regard for impressing others.

If you are seeking a simple, natural lifestyle, consider English country house plans rather than affected, earth-unfriendly luxury estate house plans mansions. There are inexpensive but elegant authentic English country cottage house plans available to suit any budget and lifestyle. Visit House Plans and More today.

Southern Living Ranch Home Plans For Traditional Southern Comfort

When one thinks of Southern style architecture, a number of motifs come to mind, such as a grand front porch flanked by white pillars and an elaborate staircase leading up from the front hall. However, there are many styles of architecture associated with the America's south, ranging from Spanish mission house plans to French Creole style through American Federal architecture, as well as traditional plantation homes. The one common denominator in Southern style architecture is charm. And the accent of Southern architectural charm is the genteel, slow-moving lifestyle which it suggests.

Antebellum architecture has reference to the elegant plantations residences constructed in the Southern United States from the Revolution until the Civil War. The term "Antebellum" refers not so much to a particular style as it does to a place and a time in history. The features distinctive of Antebellum architecture were brought into the South by English settlers who advanced into the region following the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The majority of Antebellum houses follow the Greek or Classical Revival styles; or else the Federal style, with its grand symmetry balanced around central entrances both front and in the rear; and with balconies and decorative pillars and columns.

Aficionados of the film Gone With the Wind may believe that Scarlett O'Hara's Georgia plantation house is typically indigenous to the South. But that type of antebellum architecture, with the expansive front porch and white pillars, is in fact derived from Greek and Roman architectural style. This style was common from the late 1700's through the middle 1800's throughout the U.S., not only in the South. However, the largest number of these Greek Revival houses survived there because the economy of the South was depressed following the Civil War, so Southern homeowners weren't able to afford to remodel or change their southern living ranch home plans, as was being done in the North. After World War II the Southern economy improved, but by then homeowners spent their money in restoration rather than replacement.

Some distinctly regional architectural styles emerged in the South, including Charleston Single. This Federalist influenced style usually had a central hallway which was flanked by several rooms on each floor. The houses were turned so that two doors to the outside as well as a front porch were facing the street, and the windows and doors were oriented to allow in breezes. Wealthy Charlestonians constructed of brick, while the less affluent made do with wood construction. Another distinctive regional architectural style was the French Creole style, which intermingled influences from the West Indies by way of France and Spain. This style emerged late in the 1700's and is best exemplified in New Orleans. These homes have hipped roofs, porches or galleries, French windows, and wrought-iron or wooden columns (and detailing).

In the mid-twentieth century the distinctive Southern style met and blended with prairie house building plans designed originally by Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers. These low-profile, wide-windowed, single-story homes were designed to blend in to their environments. Some of the box-like mass-housing built along these lines following World War II has proven functional in the warm Southern climate as well as revolutionary in design.

Southern living ranch home plans are the latest adaptation of traditionally Southern styles such as Spanish mission house plans. Whether traditionally styled or whether following the modern prairie house building plans style, the distinctive charm of Southern architecture is its accent on Comfort.

How Wooden Shutters Can Add Value To Your Home!

If you're looking for that finishing touch to just round off your home or even something which you could add to your house in order to increase its value, then wood shutters are the way to go.

Also known as plantation shutters, these kinds of shutters can add a touch of elegance to your home. Their classic styling is what makes them so popular, combined with the fact that they can be stained or painted to your needs.

Wood shutters can also create a kind of theme for the house. They are good at bringing all of the windows together and giving a uniform style. At the same time it is their sheer versatility and the way that they can fit in with modern and old fashioned decors that makes them the window shutters of choice.

Moving away from the looks aspect for a moment, it's important to realise how much insulation wooden shutters can give. They are superb at keeping in the warmth. Likewise if you need shutters that are able to vary the amount of light you let in then wooden shutters are great regulators here too.

Wood shutters are warm and authentic but their closest rival is the vinyl shutter. These types of shutters are generally cheaper than wood and that is what is making them almost as popular as our old friend the good ol' wooden shutter.

You get what you pay for however, and wooden shutters are the real deal! With vinyl, you can usually only get them in white or a variant thereof - and naturally staining is not an option. Also, if you have an irregular shaped window such as an arch then you just can't get vinyl shutters that will do the job. Let's not forget how customisable wooden shutters are.

Lastly, the majority of vinyl shutters can be rather cheaply made so you should always aim for quality and that's where wood shutter come in.

They are extremely easy to clean - just wipe a damp cloth across them. But if you'd prefer you can just give them a lick of paint every few months to keep them looking good as new.

The majority of wood shutters are made of cedar wood - in itself strong and durable, though it may be wise to invest in some wood protection kits if you choose this option.

Overall then, wooden shutters look classy, keep you warm, regulate light more easily than other shutters and while they may be more pricey than their rivals - their customisation and look will do wonders for the value of your home.

The most chosen method of installation is inside of the window frame itself, or you can use a window strip and place it on the outside of the window frame.

Window shutters can be purchased as a single shutter that opens much like a window blind or you can purchase a two-panel shutter that opens from side to side. There are several other choices of window shutters that you can choose from to make your room into warm and cozy room, however it is important that you take into consideration the size of your room and the size of your windows to insure that the look is right for your room, with window shutter treatments, you can control the amount of light that comes into the room. Another option for window shutter treatments is shutters that have four panels. This insures total privacy especially late at night. Choosing the right window shutter

Among the many types of window shutters that are available today, louvers are a very popular choice. A louver is a window shutter that has horizontal slats instead of vertical. They start at one and one-quarter inch slats and can go as big as four and a half inches. It is important to remember that the size of the slats in your shutters controls the amount of light that enters the room. Louvers are typically made of polymer or wood. Both of these types of louvers add beauty and elegance to any room.

· Wooden shutters can also add beauty and elegance to a room. They are usually made of pine, however, they can be purchased in cherry or oak wood. Fabrics, accessories, and custom shutters provide excellent privacy control for the bedroom and bathroom windows

If your bedroom or bathroom faces the street or a nearby neighbor, issues of privacy and light control, plays a very important part in addressing your wellbeing and piece of mine. There are a couple of window treatments available to choose from such as lined panels, operative shutters, or light-controlling blinds. Either one of these window treatments will secure your privacy from unwanted eyes while taking a shower or changed your clothing.

Keeping light out of the bedroom is as important as letting it in or controlling its levels. Blinds do not offer as much noise control as heavy fabric shades and provide privacy only when they are completely closed. Heavy draperies are seldom appropriate for the scale and style of bedrooms, so use a combination of light draperies, shades, or blinds. Check the fabric to determine how much privacy and light control it offers.

Natural light is optimal light. To achieve good natural light control during the day, hang a flexible window treatment that provides privacy but let in maximum daylight. The best investment is a set of plantation shutters or high-quality blinds. If blinds blades don't fit tightly and are turned downwards, upstairs neighbors may be able to see through them. The same goes for blades turned upward, downstairs neighbors may be able to peer in.

A blind with standard white plastic or metal blades is always a good choice, while shiny; chrome blades express a sleek, chic style. Both are waterproof and easily cleaned with a dust cloth or a brush designed for blind blades. Another option is to install a classic white roller shade; it disappears behind a valance when rolled up to let in the light. Bedrooms and bathrooms should be restful, but they don't have to be dull or dated. Give your sleepy abode a wakeup call with lively window treatment.

How Plantation and Vinyl Shutters Can Change the Look and Feel of Your Home Both Inside and Out

If you want a great way to change the look and feel of your home both inside and out, consider both plantation shutter for the inside and vinyl shutters for the outside. The great thing about shutters is that they come in a variety of styles, designs, sizes, colors and materials so that it is easy to find exactly what you need and will fit your budget.

Another great option if you live on the coast is hurricane shutters. These shutters can be made to enhance your home’s appearance but can also play a vital role in protecting it against the wrath of a hurricane. The key role hurricane shutters play is keeping your windows in place and in one piece. Every year people get serious injured or even killed by shards of glass from broken windows. They are also an excellent way to protect your home from intrusion while you are away on vacation.

For inside our home, we often recommend plantation shutters to really spice up a room. They can dress a room up or down, that will depend on the look and feel you are after. Not only are they functional and easy to use, they can add style and warmth to a room. This is key when designing the area. They are come in a variety of colors, styles and sizes ranging from smaller louver sizes of 2.5 inches and going up to 4.5 inches. The larger the room and windows, the larger the louver size. You don’t want to put small louvers on bit windows as the look you want to create may be lost.

Plantation shutters are available in real wood, faux wood and vinyl. All have their advantages and disadvantages and cost can come into play here. Real wood shutters tend to be more expensive and can warp and fade when exposed to direct sunlight over a period of time. They do look very nice however and often bring a rich, warm feeling to the room. Faux wood shutters are often guaranteed against fading and warping and are an excellent choice if you want something to last a long time. Vinyl shutters are a great choice for those who live in humid climates. Vinyl stands up well to moisture and again the new designs are very appealing.

For the outside of you home there is nothing more appealing than window shutters. Again you can choose from a huge selection of styles, designs, colors and materials. We always recommend getting something that is maintenance free. Real wood shutters will flake and peel and will likely require painting every several years. With vinyl shutters, you will not have chipping, flaking or peeling shutters. Designs of vinyl shutters offer real wood grain textures along with great color choices.

So if it is time to update the look of your home, be sure to check plantation and vinyl shutters. You will be impressed with the selection, prices and look.
